On the day of December 31, 2024, as 2024 comes to an end, I review my notes from my past self to see what I have accomplished so far. I find a note that fascinates me the most. Here it is:
"When we feel we are striving for something and that something has gone so far—far enough to render our efforts in vain—we begin to perceive ourselves as failures. Our belief in ourselves vanishes; our calm demeanor turns to despair; our strength and drive are fraught with anxiety. We call upon God and justice, but the only thing that can help is myself.- Ratha, writing in the evening of October 4, 2016"
The words, penned by my past self, paint a vivid picture of despair. "When we feel we are striving for something and that something has gone so far—far enough to render our efforts in vain—" Ah, that feeling of futility. Of chasing a receding horizon, of pouring your heart and soul into something only to watch it slip further and further out of reach.
The note goes on to describe the insidious nature of this despair: the erosion of self-belief, the transformation of calm into despair, the crippling anxiety that replaces strength and drive. It's a chillingly accurate portrayal of a state of mind I, and I suspect many others, have experienced.
But then, a glimmer of truth emerges: "We call upon God and justice, but the only thing that can help is myself."
This line, penned by my younger, more vulnerable self, now resonates with a profound sense of wisdom. It's a stark reminder that while external forces may seem to conspire against us, the ultimate source of strength and resilience lies within OURSELVES.
Reading this note today, years later, evokes a range of emotions. There's a tinge of sadness, of course, for the pain and despair that once consumed me. But there's also a profound sense of gratitude. I am grateful for the lessons learned, for the resilience I've cultivated, and for the fact that I did, indeed, find a way to overcome those challenges.
This note serves as a poignant reminder that even in the darkest of times, the power to heal, grow, and overcome lies within us. It's a testament to the human spirit's incredible capacity for resilience.
If you're struggling with feelings of despair or hopelessness, know that you are not alone. Remember the words of my past self: "The only thing that can help is myself." Tap into your inner strength, seek support from loved ones, and never give up on your dreams. You are stronger than you think.
